Volunteers needed in Cameron and Potter counties
Coudersport – PennDOT is still seeking volunteers for this year’s Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania, which began March 1 and runs through May 31.
“Cleanup events like this help to improve the quality of life for residents in Cameron and Potter counties by creating cleaner roadsides and communities,” said Kevin Kline, PennDOT District 2 Executive. “Many volunteers join in year after year to show their support, and we encourage everyone across the region to show their community pride through these opportunities.”
The Great American Cleanup is a one-day commitment, but volunteers can also make a regular contribution through PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program. By joining Adopt-A-Highway, clean-up groups commit to a minimum of two pick-ups per year. Many of PennDOT’s 7,1000 Adopt-A-Highway groups, who collect trash year ‘round, also join in the Great American Cleanup. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Great American Cleanup or Adopt-A-Highway can contact Cassie Morey, the Cameron and Potter counties coordinator at 814-260-9648. You can also go to www.gacofpa.org for information.
In 2012, more than 141,000 volunteers collected more than 6.7 million pounds of unsightly litter from Pennsylvania’s roads, trails and shorelines for the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania. PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program contributed nearly 78,000 volunteers that accounted for the cleanup of nearly 53 percent of the 6.7 million tons of litter collected and over 10,961 miles of cleaned up roadway.
PennDOT provides gloves, trash bags and safety vests to cleanup volunteers. Call Cassie Morey at 814-260-9648 to volunteer and get your supplies.
