Dog Officers On The Lookout; Licenses Available

Dog license officers are now conducting a canvass in Potter County, checking to see if owners have purchased their 2013 licenses. Pennsylvania dog owners can still purchase dog licenses from county treasurers. In Potter County, licenses are available online through the county’s website, pottercountypa.net (click on Departments/Treasurer’s Office), or in person at the Treasurer’s Office in the Gunzburger Building. An annual license for all dogs three months or older is required by state law. Cost is $8.45 per license, or $6.45 if the dog is spayed or neutered. Discounts of $2.00 per license are available for older adults and people with disabilities. Lifetime licenses are available for $51.45 or $31.45. They must be purchased in person at the Treasurer’s Office.

Those who chose the county’s new online option pay $2.00 more for the service. The treasurer’s office will receive automatic notification of online orders and will mail the tags to owners generally within one to two days. In addition to the convenience, there are other benefits to buying licenses online. Police agencies and dog law enforcement officers have access to the online database to facilitate return of lost dogs through license numbers. The site also offers a free service through which owners of lost pets can upload a picture and information.

Those ordering licenses though the mail or applying in person can print applications from the county’s website (pottercountypa.net) and send them with payment to County Treasurer, 1 N. Main St., Suite 202, Coudersport PA 16915. Owners who fail to license their dogs could be subject to a fine of up to $300 per animal.
